"All mentors are coaches but not all coaches are mentors."
Coaching and Mentorship is definitely not the same thing; each affects you differently because they are different in application. Although these 2 concepts (words) are used interchangeably on a large scale, they are in fact very dissimilar.
The difference between coaching and mentoring is as different as the difference between effectiveness and greatness. While coaching can certainly produce effective results, it is mentorship that produces greatness. This is why the two are different in kind as well as in application.
The overarching principle behind these 2 concepts is SEE-FEEL-DO-GET. It behaves in this manner; the way we SEE things affect how we FEEL which affect what we DO and thus the results we ultimately GET.
Essentially our perception of our environment drives our emotions which fuel our actions and begets the results we see manifested in our lives.
The way in which this principle acts upon coaching and mentorship is simple.
Coaching, while effective, only deals with half of the principle – the DO-GET portion. Its focus is only on half of a person – the part that is physical – the part that executes. When you are able to help someone DO something better than before, obviously you will ultimately yield better results. It is simple logic.
Mentorship on the other hand deals with the whole principle and thus acts upon the whole person. Its focus is on the entire being of a person. In other words, when you mentor someone, your first goal is to cause the person to first SEE himself differently so that he can FEEL differently and therefore DO differently and ultimately GET different results.
You see, a mentor's role is not just to have you improve upon what you are doing but also to improve the way you see yourself. This is what produces true greatness – affecting others in ways that help them not only find their voice but also to courageously express it.
While a coach can effectively help you become a master of your craft on the field, a mentor can help you become the master of your fate – to have control over all your thoughts.
While coaches understand how to play; mentors understand how to think. The bottom line is that if you are able to have better thoughts, you will be able to have better everything else. Better thoughts mean that you SEE, FEEL, DO and GET better – simple.
Some of the greatest teams in history were great because they weren't just coached to be the best – they were mentored into greatness. One of the best examples I have ever seen of a coach making the leap to mentorship is from the movie "Facing the Giants." You can link to the video clip here and see for yourself. It's awesome!
If you watched the video then you'll know exactly what I am talking about. This coach made a giant leap when he put his ego aside to help the best leader on his team recognize the great leadership ability in himself.
You see, mentors don't just help others grow – they help them see themselves as the leaders they were meant to be. I still get goose bumps every time I watch this video or use it in one of my programs.
So, as you can clearly see, coaching and mentorship are two completely different things – both can be effective; however, mentorship builds leaders. While coaching grows your physical prowess, mentorship grows your character.
Some people have said well "when you become better at something, don't you automatically feel better about yourself?"
While this is true, the fact is that when you are simply coached to be physically better at something and you feel better about yourself – you're only feeling better about the self that you are aware of – the one you see.
When you are mentored to be better, you are able to first see yourself in a different and better light so that you are not only improving upon your physicality but also on your mentality, emotionality and spirituality. Through mentorship, you can improve all 4 quotients of the human make up – IQ, EQ, PQ and SQ.
Recognizing the difference as well as understanding the application of coaching and mentorship is extremely important. When you understand what you are looking for you will know better where to look and how to apply each to achieve the best results in your life.
